Replying to a Discussion
You can easily reply to any discussion. However, the reply options may vary depending upon how your instructor set up the discussion. Before submitting a reply for a graded discussion, make sure to review all discussion instructions, such as a rubric, if your instructor has included one.

To attach a file to your reply click 00:29: the attach link. 00:32: To post your reply click the reply button. 00:35: Your reply automatically displays at the top of the discussion reply thread. 00:40: To respond to a discussion reply. Reply Restriction
Your instructor may require that you reply to the discussion before seeing your classmates' posts. You will see a notification if this setting is turned on (see above).
View Discussion Replies
You can view all replies in a discussion by scrolling or searching content. Discussion replies are sorted by date, newest to oldest. Watch the following Canvas Shorts on How do I view and sort discussion replies [06:46].
00:07: How do I view and sort discussion replies as a student? 00:11: In course navigation click the discussions link 00:15: Click the title of the discussion 00:18: In a discussion you have several options to view and sort discussions. 00:22: Use the search field to search for replies or specific authors. 00:27: To filter discussion replies by all or unread replies select an option 00:31: from The View drop-down menu. 00:34: To sort discussions by date posted click the sort button Discussion 00:38: replies are sorted newest to oldest by default. 00:43: To view threaded replies in a split-screen sidebar click the view split 00:47: screen button. To view threaded replies inline click 00:51: the inline button that displays when the view split screen button is clicked. 00:57: To view threaded replies all at once click the expand threads button. 01:01: To collapse the threaded replies click the collapse threads button. 01:06: You can view how many total replies and unread replies are in a thread. 01:10: The number on the left indicates total replies while the number on the right indicates 01:15: the number of unread replies. 01:18: To subscribe to a discussion. Click the Subscribe icon. 01:22: Subscribing to a discussion allows you to follow the discussion and receive notifications 01:26: as set in your notification settings. You are automatically subscribed 01:30: to any discussions you reply to when you create a discussion in a group 01:35: or in a course, if you have permission, you are also automatically subscribed 01:39: to the discussion. If you are subscribed the icon displays a solid 01:43: green background. To unsubscribe click the Subscribe 01:48: icon when you are unsubscribed the icon displays outlined 01:52: in Black. 01:54: If your discussion is a graded discussion, you can view the discussion the same way as 01:58: regular discussions. However, you can view the number of points. 02:02: The discussion is worth and if there is a due date. 02:06: If a discussion is a group discussion, you can view the group discussion from the 02:10: course discussions index page or from your group discussions index page. 02:15: If the discussion is an anonymous discussion a message displays noting that 02:19: your name and profile picture will be hidden from other course members. 02:24: Discussion replies are shown in order of post date in discussion replies 02:28: the unread icon indicates. The reply is new and unread 02:33: After you view a discussion reply the unread icon no longer displays. 02:38: When you scroll past a reply navigate away from the discussion or refresh 02:42: the page canvas automatically marks the replies as read. 02:46: After canvas has changed the reply status. 02:48: You can manually Mark discussion replies as read or unread at any time. 02:54: You can also change your discussion settings. 02:56: So you can manually Mark discussion replies as read. 03:00: Reply Mark and collapse discussion threads 03:04: When viewing inline discussion thread replies, you can collapse and expand 03:08: the discussion threads by clicking the expand threads and collapse threads buttons. 03:12: When a discussion thread reply is collapsed you can view the reply indicators 03:17: showing the number of unread and total replies. 03:21: To expand the discussion thread replies inline. 03:23: Click the hash of replies link. 03:27: View the read and unread replies. 03:30: To view threaded replies options click the options icon. 03:33: You can Mark replies as read unread Mark 03:37: threaded replies as read unread return to the topic quote 03:41: the reply or report the reply. 03:45: To view threaded replies in a split-screen sidebar click the view split 03:49: screen button. 03:51: When viewing split screen discussion thread replies, you can collapse and expand 03:55: the discussion thread replies sidebar. 03:58: When a discussion thread reply is collapsed you can view the reply indicators 04:02: showing the number of unread and total replies. 04:06: To expand the discussion thread replies sidebar click the hash of replies 04:10: link. Then view the read and unread replies. 04:16: To view threaded replies options click the options icon. 04:19: You can Mark replies as read unread Mark 04:23: threaded replies as read unread return to the topic quote 04:27: the reply or report the reply. 04:31: To collapse the discussion thread reply sidebar. 04:33: Click the close icon. 04:36: If your instructor allows you to like replies in a discussion, ah, like icon 04:40: appears next to each reply in the discussion. 04:44: A solid blue like icon indicates replies that you've liked. 04:47: The number of total likes also appears next to the icon. 04:52: If you are allowed to edit their discussion posts, you can view the edit history of 04:56: your post. To view the history click the view history 05:00: link 05:02: In the edit history window, you can view any version with the date and timestamp 05:06: of your post. To expand all of the versions click the expand 05:10: all button. To return to the discussion click the close 05:15: button. 05:16: To search for a discussion reply enter any term in the search field. 05:20: Search results include matches for usernames and reply text. 05:25: To clear search results and view all replies remove your search term from 05:29: the search field. 05:32: Each discussion reply has its own options menu. 05:36: To Mark the selected post as read or unread click the mark As option. 05:42: In original discussion replies, you can return to the main discussion topic 05:46: by clicking the go to topic option. In threaded discussions, 05:50: if you are viewing a reply within a reply return to the original reply 05:54: by clicking the go to parent option. 05:58: If you want to quote the current reply click the quote reply option. 06:02: If a reply was quoted in the threaded reply click go to quoted reply to view 06:06: the reply that was quoted. 06:09: If you are allowed to edit and delete your own discussion posts, you will also view 06:13: edit and delete options. 06:16: If you are allowed to report replies, you will also view the report option. 06:21: To reply to a discussion reply to the main discussion topic by clicking the 06:25: reply button.
