Hint: ENG Transliterating VS. ASL Interpreting

Watch the videos by Tom Cox.  You might need to cover one side (by opening a new window or with something physically covering that part of your screen).  

 

Notice the difference between ENG transliteration and ASL interpretation.  

 

BEFORE, YOU WERE TO:  Be sure you are using transliteration techniques (conceptually correct ASL vocabulary words/signs, mouthing English words, signing in English word order) in your GoReact video transliteration of your class goal(s).

NOW, YOU ARE TO:  Be sure you are using INTERPRETATION techniques (conceptually correct ASL vocabulary words/signs, using MOUTH MORPHEMES, signing in ASL word order in your GoReact video interpretation of your class goal(s).  Watch Tom's video:

Instructions:  Answer the questions below and email your response to the instructor.  Due Tues 8/30 at 4:29 p.m.

1.  Count how many ENG words you see Tom mouth in his transliteration.

2.  Count how many ASL mouth morphemes Tom used in his transliteration.

3.  Count how many ENG words you see Tom mouth in his interpretation.

4.  Count how many ASL mouth morphemes Tom used in his transliteration.

5.  Count how many times you saw "topicalization" (raising eyebrows to indicate the start of a new topic/subject/idea) in his transliteration.

6.  Count how many times you saw "topicalization" (raising eyebrows to indicate the start of a new topic/subject/idea) in his interpretation.

7.  Count how many times you saw the topic mentioned before a comment was made about the topic in Tom's transliteration.

8.  Count how many times you saw the topic mentioned before a comment was made about the topic in Tom's interpretation.

9.  Count how many times you saw "rhetorical, WH- and / or Y/N questions" in Tom's transliteration.

10.  Count how many times you saw "rhetorical, WH- and / or Y/N questions" in Tom's interpretation.
