Why tags are important

Tagging is essential to PDF accessibility. Tags establish a logical reading order, provide a means for indicating structure and type, and add alternative text descriptions to non-text elements in a PDF document.

The Tags Panel can reveal the accessibility of a PDF by displaying:

  • which text and images can be interpreted by a screen-reader
  • the document reading order

The Tags Panel can also edit the accessibility of a PDF by allowing the user to:

  • add or edit existing table tags
  • change the tag type
  • modify the document reading order

At the end of this module, you should be able to:

  • Determine if a PDF has tags.
  • Evaluate if the tags are in a logical reading order.
  • Remediate a given inaccessible PDF.
