Make Accessible Action Wizard & Accessibility Checker
Not all PDFs require heading styles, but a PDF should still have tags. If a PDF has a considerable amount of content and the user would benefit from additional navigation support (e.g., defined logical reading order, identified content headings, added descriptions to images, etc.), then it is necessary to add tags to the PDF document.
Recall in the PDF Accessibility Repair Workflow Module, we discussed the following workflow to consider when addressing PDF accessibility:
- Is the PDF text-based?
- Does the PDF contain links?
- Does the PDF have multimedia?
- Is the PDF a Form with Fillable Form Fields?
- Are there tags? (run the Make Accessible Action Wizard)
- Finally, run the Accessibility Checker
After assessing the document, the author can utilize the tools available in Adobe Acrobat to manipulate the reading order of text, add or remove content from the reading order, add descriptions to images, reclassify headings, and add accessibility information to data tables. Once the appropriate accessibility modifications are made to the PDF document, save the PDF file and perform the assessment process again to verify the document's accessibility. This is just one sample workflow that can be used to assess and correct the accessibility of PDF documents, but it should be modified to fit the needs and organization of the institution.

Word of Caution
The accessibility checking tools in Adobe Acrobat Pro DC — the Accessibility Checker (Full Check) and the Make Accessible Action Wizard — can identify many issues in PDF documents. However, it is important to note that these accessibility checking tools are automated evaluation tools; they do not check documents for all accessibility criteria, and Adobe does not warrant that documents will comply with any specific guidelines or regulations.
