With their permission, we have modified this course to meet the needs of State College of Florida.
Engaging in this course will help you understand civil rights issues surrounding accessibility and empower you to design learning experiences that promote inclusive learning environments. You will learn about the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and accessibility guidelines and standards. These important aspects of accessibility will enable you to address challenges and reduce barriers faced by students related to access, success, and completion.
Over this 2 module course, you will be able to:
- Recognize how students with disabilities often face academic barriers to access, success, and completion.
- Articulate faculty and staff roles in reducing barriers for students with disabilities
- With accessibility in mind, utilize the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in designing learning experiences
- Utilize Section 508 standards and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 guidelines to create accessible courses
- Determine the appropriate tools and techniques to use based on the content within a course.
You will participate in assignments, take short quizzes, watch videos, and explore relevant readings.
Format
Each module may include:
- Videos covering the topic
- Readings to enhance your understanding
- Discussions to connect to others exploring accessibility
- Quizzes to check your understanding
- Assignments to show your mastery of the material
Successful completion of each modules' activities and assessments is required to earn the SCF Accessibility Certificate.
Meet the Course Instructors
Director, Online Learning: Gary Baker (941)752-5431, bakerg@scf.edu Gary has more than 15 years of direct experience as a director of online learning and has taught business courses for many years.
Staff Assistant: Melanie Wallace (941)752-5237 wallacm@scf.eduMelanie joined the SCF Online team in the Summer of 2014. She is working on her computer science degree at SCF and brings lots of talent and technological savvy to the team.
Instructional Designer: Dale Drees (941)752-5345 dreesd@scf.edu Dale joined SCF in the spring of 2014.He was a former director of online learning at University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee and also worked at New College of Florida and Hillsborough Community College. He brings a lot of years of educational experience to the team.
Instructional Designer: Angie Fairweather (941)752-5437 fairwea@scf.edu Angie recently arrived at SCF in June 2016 after teaching Marine and Physical Science classes online at Florida Virtual School. She has her Master's in Instructional Design and provides support to faculty and staff.
LMS Administrator: Natalia Gerasimnova gerasin@scf.edu Natalia joined the Online Learning team in 2017. Natalia relocated from Wisconsion where she worked as the LMS Administrator for a college in the Milwaukee area.
