Unit Overview:

In this unit you will be introduced to the study of motivation and emotion. Motivation helps us understand why we do the things we do, and emotions are a part of everything we do, so both are important to study. There will also be a short discussion on hunger, obesity, and eating disorders. Finally, you will be introduced to the concepts of sexuality and gender, which play a significant role in our physical, cognitive, and psychosocial development.

Learning Outcomes:

After the successful completion of this learning unit, you will be able to:

Define motivation and distinguish between intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation.
Distinguish between the different theories of motivation: instinct theory, drive theory, self-efficacy and social motives, arousal, and Maslow’s approaches.
Describe how hunger and eating are regulated.
Recognize the health consequences resulting from being overweight, obesity, anorexia, and bulimia nervosa.
Understand basic biological mechanisms regulating sexual behavior and motivation.
Recognize the contributions that Alfred Kinsey’s and William Masters and Virginia Johnson’s research made to our understanding of human sexuality.
Define sexual orientation and gender identity.
Describe the three elements of emotion and the importance of producing and recognizing emotional expression.
Recognize the different theories of emotion: common-sense, James-Lange, Cannon-Bard, facial feedback, cognitive arousal, and cognitive-mediational.

Readings:

Chapter 10 has four sections that align with the learning objectives above. I strongly encourage you to spread the readings out over several days. This should make it easier to manage. Please watch the short videos I've included at the end of each section. Here is a PowerPoint that reviews the key points of this chapter. 10.1 Motivation

The chapter starts out by exploring the concept of motivation, which describes the wants or needs that direct behavior toward a goal. We will also look at the different theories of motivation that have been proposed over time. Check out this video that introduces Motivation.

10.2 Hunger and Eating

This section delves into the motivation behind hunger and eating. Specifically, we will explore the physiological mechanisms that regulate hunger as well as the powerful social, cultural, and economic influences on hunger and eating and how they can lead to obesity. We will also look at some eating disorders and their adverse consequences on our health. Here is a short video that reviews important concepts related to the motivation behind Hunger and Eating.

10.3 Sexual Behavior

This section introduces you to the concepts of sexuality and gender as they will ultimately have a strong impact on various aspects of human sexual behavior. We start out with a look at the biological mechanisms regulating sexual behavior followed by a review of the research conducted on sexual behaviors and the human sexual response cycle. Next, we will explore sexual orientation, gender identity, and the cultural factors related to both concepts. Finally, we will discuss gender roles. 10.4 Emotion

This section focuses on emotions, which are an important form of information and communication, because they can help us understand our own motivations and attitudes as well as those of others. We will look at the elements of an emotion, explore the different theories that have been proposed to explain the process of emotion, and examine the brain structures involved in emotion. The section ends with a discussion of emotional expression. This video explores the different aspects of Emotion.
