Waitlisted Role in Canvas

You may have been or are still on the waitlist for one or more courses in this semester. If you are a waitlisted student, you have limited access to classes in Canvas.

Waitlisted students can view the syllabus (course information), announcements, modules (course content), and discussions posted on Canvas. You can also use the inbox to message your instructor but you cannot submit any assigned activities, post any comments, respond to posts or contact other students in the class.

It is important that you participate in the course for which you are waitlisted to make sure you have all the relevant information. If your instructor provides you permission to add, it is important that you visit self-service to process your add. (https://selfservice.scccd.edu/Student/ Links to an external site.) to register for the course ASAP. Not sure how to add? Refer to the Adding a Waitlisted Class Links to an external site. page. Once you are registered, your status will change automatically to the official “student” role, and you can then fully participate in the course.

Please keep in mind that the process of changing your status from “Waitlisted” to “Student” is not immediate. Canvas enrollment updates 6 times a day (first one at 6 AM and last one at 8 PM). You may need to wait some time for your status to change. Additionally, your instructor cannot change your status on Canvas. The process will happen automatically once you visit Self-Service and enroll in the class.

Q & A

I am waitlisted on a course, should I still contact my instructor?

Yes. You should contact your instructor to find out about their expectations. However, your instructor may also reach out to you and explain their expectations around adding the course. They may inform you that there are no remaining seats in the class or they may provide you with permission to add through self-service.

Why can’t I submit an assignment when I am on the waitlist?

The waitlist status gives “read-only” access to the content of the course since you are not officially enrolled in the course until you process permission to add in self-service.

While I wait to get permission to add, can I use the publisher's website free trial access to participate in the course?

Yes if the publisher offers a free trial. You must make sure to use your student email account to sign up for the free trial so that if you become an official student in the course your work in the publisher’s website can be transferred to Canvas. It is not advisable to purchase class materials or the textbook until you are officially enrolled.

Can I get access to a book for the class from the library while I wait to be added to the course?

Yes, if the book is on the reserve list in the library.

*All Waitlisted students who do not get officially added to the course through the permission process will be removed the day before the Census day. The Census day is the last day to add a course. While you can still see the course, you can not interact with it.
