What is Turnitin?

Turnitin is a plagiarism Links to an external site. detection service that is integrated with Canvas assignments. Turnitin checks your work with their database of other works and resources and generates a percentage of matches in a Similarity Report. Your instructor may also use Turnitin to provide you feedback on your work.

 

Before Submitting to Turnitin

Check that your submission file meets Turnitin requirements. Files must have a file extension (.docx, .pdf, etc.) depending on the settings in the assignment. Review the File Requirements Links to an external site. for specific information. You can also ask your instructor if they are looking for a specific file type for the assignment.

 

How do I Submit a Turnitin Assignment?

When your instructor is setting up a Turnitin assignment, they have two options to choose from. The first option is more streamlined with Canvas (Canvas Plagiarism Framework). The second option uses an integration that allows you to access Turnitin within Canvas (Turnitin LTI External Tool).

Option 1

With the first option you can simply upload and submit your assignment like you typically would for any other Canvas assignment. You can view Turnitin's Guide on Submitting to an assignment Links to an external site..

Option 2

With the second option, you would still select the assignment in your course. When you do, it will take you to Turnitin's Assignment Inbox.

The Similarity Report

If your instructor has allowed you to see the Similarity Report, you can click the score to view the report. Review Turnitin's Guide on Interpreting the Similarity Report Links to an external site. for additional information.

 

Viewing Instructor Feedback

Once your instructor has finished reviewing your paper, they may include comments and other feedback on your paper. View Paper Feedback Links to an external site. for additional information on the different types of feedback.

 

E-Rater Feedback

The e-rater grammar feedback technology checks your submission for grammar, usage, mechanics, style and spelling errors, and provides feedback with on paper marks. You can then click on the marks to view a more detailed description of the mark. Your instructor can also add their own comment feedback to you through the paper marks. PeerMark
