What is LockDown Browser?

LockDown Browser is a custom browser that locks down the testing environment within Canvas. When using LockDown Browser to access a test, you will be unable to print, copy, visit other websites, access other applications, or close a test until it is submitted for grading. Computer Requirements

Before installing LockDown Browser, check that your device has the latest operating system and hardware. You can do so by reviewing the Computer Requirements Links to an external site..

Installing LockDown Browser

After you have checked that your device is updated, you can now install LockDown Browser on the computer you will be using for the test. Your instructor is highly encouraged to give a practice test so you can download and install the LockDown Browser prior to an actual exam.

This download is unique and will only work for Fresno City College students. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation. After installation you will now see a LockDown Browser icon on your desktop. This is where you will go to take any tests that require LockDown Browser.

Taking a Test with LockDown Browser

If a test requires LockDown Browser, you will only be able to take the test in LockDown Browser and the following message will appear as a reminder.

  1. Close all programs and any open files or browser windows.
  2. Locate the "LockDown Browser" shortcut on your desktop and double click. (Mac users: Launch "LockDown Brower" from the Applications folder.)
  3. You may be prompted to close any blocked programs (such as a screen capture, instant messaging, etc.). Choose yes to close the programs or close LockDown Browser and then close the blocked programs before restarting.
  4. Log into Canvas using your Fresno City College login information.
  5. Navigate to your course and to the test and begin the test.

Once a test has been started with Respondus LockDown Browser, you will not be able to exit until the quiz has been submitted for grading.

 

What is Respondus Monitor?

Respondus Monitor, is a webcam feature that builds upon LockDown Browser. When this feature is enabled for a test, you will be required to use a webcam and microphone with LockDown Browser and will be recorded during online, non-proctored tests.

 

Taking a Test with LockDown Browser + Respondus Monitor

If required to use the webcam feature (referred to as Respondus Monitor), you will want to make sure your computer has a working webcam and microphone as well as a stable internet connection. If you do not, reach out to your instructor and let them know.

Once you click on 'Take the Quiz' there will be a 'Startup Sequence'. The startup time will not be counted against your test taking time. Depending on the settings set by your instructor, you may have to go through all or just some of the following. Click on Startup Sequence for additional information.

First, review and agree to the Terms of Use.

The Webcam Check will confirm that your webcam and microphone are working properly.

Click the Yes button to continue if your webcam is working properly and you can see your image in the window. If you still need to adjust your webcam, click the No button and try again.

LockDown Browser will also check your microphone by recording a video. Click on the Record Five Second Video button to begin recording. The video will playback for your review. Click Continue if you can clearly hear your voice and see your image in the playback video.

Click Close to finish the Webcam Check and continue the Startup Sequence.

 

The following steps will depend on the settings chosen by your instructor. Follow the instructions and if you encounter a problem, select the 'It's not working' link for troubleshooting.

Student Photo

Your test may require a Student Photo. Your photo should be taken in a well-lit area and clearly identify your face. Click on Take Picture to take your photo. Click Continue if the photo can clearly identify you. If you need to retake the photo, select Try Again.

Photo ID

Your test may require you provide a Photo ID. Hold your identification to the webcam and select Take Picture. You can use a FCC Student ID.

Environment Check

Your instructor may require an Environment Check to make sure your working area is clear of any unapproved resources such as papers, books, phones, etc. Click Start Recording and slowly tilt and move the webcam/laptop so a brief video can be made of the area around your computer. Click Stop Recording when finished.

Facial Detection Check

Your face will need to be well-positioned in the detection window and clearly visible. Once facial detection is successful, you may proceed with the sequence. Click Continue when LockDown Browser displays a green thumbs-up icon.

 

Your exam will begin after the Startup Sequence is complete. You cannot exit LockDown Browser until the test is submitted for grading.
