Namecoach

 

In alignment with this strategic goal and to facilitate a culture of respect on campus and in the classroom, Fresno City College (FCC) has partnered with Namecoach to ensure the correct pronunciation of your name. Provided by funding from the Office of Instruction at FCC, Namecoach provides audio pronunciations and phonetic spellings of names, as well as other information important to students' sense of self.

 

What is Namecoach

Namecoach is an integrated tool in Canvas that enables students and instructors to record the pronunciation of their name so that the instructor can hear how to say their name correctly. Additional settings include selecting preferred pronouns and phonetics. Once you setup Namecoach, the information is saved across all of your FCC courses.

You may access Namecoach directly by clicking on the Namecoach link [1] in the course menu. Your instructor may also create a Namecoach Assignment and clicking on the assignment will also take you to Namecoach. If you do not see this link, your instructor may not have enabled Namecoach in the course.

 

Recording Your Name

When you reach the Namecoach dashboard you will see your name, email and a Record Namebutton. Click on the button.

A new window should appear where you will enter your information.

Enter your Preferred Name, Phonetic Spelling and Gender Pronouns [1].

By default, Namecoach will ask you to record by phone but you have three options to record your name [2].

• Phone. Enter your phone number in the dialog box shown then select Submit and Call Me. Namecoach will call you to record your name.
• Web Recorder. This option will record your name using your computer's microphone. You may have to allow your browser access to your microphone after selecting this option.
• Uploader. If you already have a sound clip saved to your computer, you can use this option to upload the audio file.

 

Once you are finished click on Submit [3] to save your information.

 

 

 

Namecoach Namebadge

The Namecoach Namebadge is a free product provided by Namecoach that allows anyone to record and share their name pronunciation, as well as other details, on their social media or email account signature. The Namebadge is a separate application from Namecoach here in Canvas.

When you access your Namebadge you will need to reset your password Links to an external site.. Use your Fresno City College email address but create your own personal password.

Once you log in you will see how a Namebadge will appear. You can edit your recording, pronunciation notes or gender pronouns.

When you scroll down to the bottom you will be able to publish or customize your Namebadge link. If you click on the Add Namebadge to your Email Signature tab, this gives you the option to copy the appropriate code to add the Namebadge to your email signature.
