Homework Details / Instructions
Week 1 Assignments - Also, check your grades
Assigned TUES 8/16 - Due THURS 8/18
1/4. EMAIL (You can check this one off your list) E-mail your instructor your preferred e-mail address
2/4. GOREACT REGISTRATION & COMMENTS (You can check this one off your list) Explain your goals for taking this class-type comments in GoReact (due SOC Thurs, Aug 18th). Submit your comments by email if you have technical issues with GoReact.
3/4. VACCINATIONS (Get at least one done before AUG 31st) - Utilize free campus health services or obtain proof (a copy of applicable records) of what you have already fulfilled. Begin the immunization process ASAP (so this process should be started before the end of this month, EVEN if you still need to complete part of the process, such as with the Hep B series or as soon as the flu shot becomes available) due to the environments in which interpreters and student observers attend-schools, hospitals, etc. It is a requirement of DHHSC along with a signature for their confidentiality policy. The campus health services office is used to offering such services to students including ones such as those in the nursing program.
Note: We also have an interpreter in the class you can observe/interview if she agrees. You can ask her before or after class. When it comes time to do so-when it is assigned in class-you can either do an in person interview or via e-mail questionnaire/survey depending on what works best if you are not able to complete an observation of an interpreter due to scheduling, etc. So either an interview or observation would be accepted. You do not need to do both, BUT if you do, you'll get extra credit! :D
Also, there will be opportunities for you to observe interpreters without the vaccination requirement, such as at DHHSC, Deaf community, and CCRID events/workshops, etc. You can still network with interpreters to interview or observe them. There are opportunities up on CANVAS already...look at the "Announcements!" Woo-hoo!
HEADS UP: Soon, we will schedule (almost) weekly student mini-presentations (as all students have an opportunity to sign up with peers/presentation partners/practice interpreters). If you know students in class, begin networking now to pull your team of presenters and interpreters (students who will interpret your presentation) together. You have the handout and it is also available in CANVAS. We will have time in class to work on the (master) sign-up sheet, but you are welcome to get a head start! Consider which topic you would prefer for your presentation. Preview the materials, etc.
4/4. Remember to READ / STUDY CHAPTER 1 - "The Importance of Communication." Be ready to be quizzed through resources possibly including mentimeter, quizlet (or similar resources), etc. as a class activity for which you will receive a grade for participation, not for an actual "quiz." No sweat, no stress - just fun learning (a part of your student learning objectives).
